The classic definition of sustainability comes from the Brundtland report of 1987: “Sustainable development is a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

” But the term has since become like a rubber band that can be stretched in all directions. Whatever the interpretation, one thing is clear: Sustainable development is not enough anymore.

And this is because “the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” is already compromised. The United Nations’ Summit of SD of 2015 resulted in the 17 SD goals (SDGs) for the year 2030. It has 169 Targets. The whole world is trying since 2015 to implement those goals and targets, with difficulty.

The United Nations and other regional organizations cooperation with regional, national, and local governments; and other relevant stakeholders to fulfil these goals and targets. However, to adequately face the challenges in implementing sustainable development programmes and related SDGs, it is rather vital to have the proper knowledge of the essential elements of SD
